Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on the content. Documents with photos and scans often shrink to a tenth of their size or less. A text-only PDF is usually small already and won’t shrink much – if the compressed file wouldn’t be smaller, you keep the original.
Will the quality get worse?
Images are resampled to a resolution suitable for screens and everyday printing (150 DPI at the Recommended level) and saved with mild compression. Text and vector graphics stay unchanged. For high-quality printing, choose Light.
What gets removed from the file?
Page thumbnails, private application data (e.g., from Illustrator) and, at the Recommended and Strong levels, the metadata of individual images. The document’s content, links, form fields and description (title, author…) are kept.
Can I compress a digitally signed PDF?
Yes, but the digital signatures will no longer be valid because the file is saved again. So compress the document before signing – in the download window, you can compress and sign in one go.
Who can see my document?
Only you and anyone you send the link to. The document is edited in your browser and only ever reaches our server encrypted. The copy deletes itself one hour after your last edit. Learn more in our privacy policy.
