Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between Whiteout and Redact?
Whiteout just places a white rectangle on the page – the text underneath technically stays in the file and can be copied. Redact actually removes the content under the marked area when you save.
Why does a redacted page become an image?
To make sure nothing remains under the black bar, we convert pages with redactions into a high-resolution image. That’s why text on these pages can no longer be selected. Other pages stay unchanged.
Can a redaction be removed from the downloaded file?
No. The removed content is no longer in the file, so nobody can recover it.
How do I redact the same word in several places?
Use Find & redact (the arrow next to the Redact tool): it finds every occurrence of your search text – or IBANs, Czech/Slovak birth numbers and other personal data – and redacts them all at once. See Anonymize PDF.
Who can see my document?
Only you and anyone you send the link to. The document is edited in your browser and only ever reaches our server encrypted. The copy deletes itself one hour after your last edit. Learn more in our privacy policy.
